Combining research with a set of unbiased metrics, this online journal recently began compiling its list of the top 250 most successful female leaders from around the world. Recently, our founder and CEO of LeadershipHQ, Sonia MCDonald, took her place on the list alongside other notable and influential women such as Australia’s first female prime minister, Julia Gillard, feminist activist Gloria Steinem, Yahoo! CEO Melissa Mayer, and Christine Lagarde, managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
As Sonia is first to point out, while it’s certainly an honour to make the list, and to share the spotlight with other trailblazing women, true leadership isn’t about earning awards and receiving public recognition.

Lists such as these are helpful because they offer insight into the personal lives, traits and habits of highly successful women and can therefore serve as inspiration and role models for other women. After all, once one woman has blazed the trail, it is easier for other women to follow in her footsteps and achieve even greater levels of success.
Still, it’s important for women of all backgrounds and positions to remember that we don’t have to gain the same level of fame as women such as Oprah Winfrey or J.K. Rowling in order to be able to influence and change the world. The power to change the world lies within each of us, once we take personal responsibility for our own actions and begin to change ourselves. As the novelist Paulo Coelho famously said, “The world is changed by examples, not opinions.” Leadership is about being that example and setting the mark.
