Recently I had the opportunity to speak in front of 40 women who work in the engineering and construction space. This was part of the NAWIC Leading Ladies Seminar Series.  I wanted to present an inspiring and practical workshop around understanding the power of the female brain and how to use it more effectively in leadership

I spoke about the Power of the Mix, and the strengths of and differences between the male and female brain. In particular, I looked at the structure of the female brain and how it relates to leadership.  We know that women have natural strengths which help us in our daily and personal lives. Not everyone understands that these strengths also work really well to support women in leadership roles. Our brains are wired for leadership. We know how to read people and because we love to build connections, we are alert to the reactions of our team members and people around us. We build relationships which, in turn, builds the right atmosphere to create trust, commitment and team unity.

We also discussed the topic of body language and how it can also shape our thinking. This is based on the work of Amy Cuddy.  Social scientists have spent a lot of time looking at the effects of body language and the judgments and interpretations we make from it. They know that body language which expresses a sense of power involves a certain stance which makes us stand straight and take up more space around us. Amy Cuddy says that when you feel powerful, you’re more likely to do this – show your power through body language – but it’s also possible that when you pretend to be powerful, you are more likely to actually feel powerful.

We tested the hypothesis by doing the Superwoman pose and analyzing how we felt as we did it.

I was very pleased that the event brought responses such as this one. “Incredibly insightful! I’ve learnt so much in just an hour and half, and it was engaging the whole time!!”

Thanks to NAWIC for giving me the opportunity to speak at this wonderful event and meet some inspiring female leaders.
